WebOPAC Help: Simple Search

 

 

Search Operation Procedure

 

1.      Specify a search target.

2.      Input the value that you want to search into the [Search value], the value is the information about materials that you have knew.

3.      If there are other search condition behind current condition, you should select value from the pull-down of [Search option] to

specify the logical operation with behind condition. The last, combining conditions to together, and go to search the materials that

you want. So you can specify multiple search conditions.

4.      Perform the search.

Local search: Click the [Search] button.

NII* search: Click the [Search NII] button.

5.      When clear the search values, please click the [Clear search conditions] button.

6.      When add the search condition, please click the button of [add].

7.      When delete the search condition, please click the button of [delete].

 

              *Search the materials of the others university that have participated in NII (National Informatics Laboratory).

Narrowing Down the Search Target

 

              Checking the checkboxes of the following search items displayed on the bibliography search screen enables narrowing down the search target.

Material type

Retrieves the search target from all material or narrow down by designation of books/serials/audiovisual material.

Holdings library

Retrieves the search target from all of holdings library or narrowed down by holdings library such as the main library and branch library.

 

Search Method

 

           Characters that can be used

                           

Characters that can be used on a Japanese page include Kanji, Hiragana, Katakana, and alphanumeric characters.

              Both upper case and lower-case alphabetic characters can be entered.  Also, both em-size and en-size characters can be entered.

 

             

           Primary and secondary search items

          

           The following search items are primary search items that can be used alone as a search condition.

      Keyword(pull-down)

      Title(pull-down)

      Authors name(pull-down)

      Publisher name(pull-down)

      ISBN/ISSN

* The value of primary items of [(pull-down)] is specified by selecting it from the [Search key] pull-down menu in the left.

The following search items are secondary search items and must be combined with at least one primary search item to perform a search.

* is placed prior to the item name on the search screen.

      Year of publication

      Country code

      Language code

      Section

      Holdings place

  Search Option

      You can specify the [Search Option] through selecting the value of pull-down menu in the right, and to search materials.

The [Search Option] have three values that are: AND, OR, NOT.

You can specify multiple search value in simple search page.

* The [Search Option]s function is combining the current search value before and after.

The following combination Cannot be executed: when searching materials with multiple search keys, must tie condition

that has the same search key to be together.

                  Search key: there are conditions of title between the conditions of keyword.

 

                  In this case, when click the [Search] button, the dialogs will be show in a pop page. Click the [OK] button to return

the simple search page, and Please correct the search condition.

* When condition has not any value in [Search value], it will be disregarded.

 

ADD and DELETE the conditions

 

1.   When you want to combine more than four search conditions, you can add the search conditions by clicking the [Add] button.

* The number of search conditions that can be added is up to ten.

2.   When you want delete the search conditions that have been added in step [1.], click the [Delete] button please. The added

Search conditions will be deleted shown by the following figures:

* The default four search conditions cannot be deleted, so there are four search conditions at least in the search page.

When click the [Delete button, the search conditions of the bellow will be deleted.

              Keyword and literal searches

          

           Two types of search methods, the keyword search and literal search, can be used.

              In the keyword search, a search of material containing the entered search values as words (= keywords) is performed.

              In the literal search, a search of material containing the entered search values simply as characters (= literals) is performed.

                           

In the literal search, the following search methods can be specified:

Roman alphabet searches

                           

When you search something with the roman alphabet, you would add the $ to the header of search key value that you want to search,

Before the time of search the value, the roman alphabet will be changed into the katakana(Japanese) automatically, and go to search

the value of katakana(Japanese) that changed from roman alphabet.

 

The Roman alphabet corresponds to the mark of the instruction type and Hepburn system.

It doesn't correspond to the long vowel character. for example: when you want to get the same result with the “キーワード”, you should

  input the value $kiwado but not the $kîwâdô

Search Items

           * in the entry examples indicates one or more blank characters.

              * [Local] indicates a search item that is valid only for local searches.  Any item with [Local] is ignored during NII search even if any value is entered.

    When you cannot get any results through the method of Example 1, please try to search by the method of Example 2.

Searches for the publisher and publishing company.

Performs a search by specifying the year of publication.

Performs a search by specifying the words representing the subject of the material.

Performs a search by specifying the classification characteristic representing the subject of the material.

Performs a search by specifying the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) or International Standard Serial Number (ISSN).

Code

Performs a search by specifying various code numbers or IDs.

Select the code from the following code designations in the pull-down menu and specify the number in the right field to perform a search.

NCID (NII bibliography record ID)

LCCN (library of congress card number)

NBN (national bibliography number)

NDLCN (national diet library card number)

NDLPN (national diet library periodicals number)

FID (family ID)

OTHN (other numbers)

Country code

Performs a search by specifying the country code.

Click the [Code reference] button on the right of the input field to check the check box of the country of publication and click the [OK] button or directly enter the code value to perform a search.

Material published in Germany (Both upper-case and lower-case characters may be used)

Language code

Performs a search by specifying the book name or the language code of the text.

Click the [Code reference] button on the right of the input field to check the check box of the language and click the [OK] button or directly enter the code value to perform a search.

Material written in Esperanto.

Bibliography ID

Performs a search by specifying the bibliography record ID assigned to each bibliography record.

Registration number

[Local]

Performs a search by specifying the registration number, which is an office control number assigned to each material.

Material ID

[Local]

Performs a search by specifying the material ID for lending/return.

Call No.

[Local]

Performs a search by specifying the call number.

(Alphabetic characters are case-sensitive.)

Performs a search by specifying the holdings section from the pull-down menu.

Performs a search by specifying the holdings place from the pull-down menu.

Performs a search by specifying the material format from the pull-down menu.

Search Options

 

    Sorting of the list of bibliographies (sort key/sorting order)

 

Specifying the sort key and sorting order during a bibliography search displays a sorted list of bibliographies.

However, when a search is performed using only primary search items of holdings such as the registration number, material ID, and request symbol, the sort key and sorting order are not enabled.

The sort key is enabled only for local searches and is not valid for NII searches.

 

The following items can be specified as the first sort key:

 

      Title

      Authors name

      Year of publication

 

The following two sorting orders can be specified:

The sorting order of the second sort key conforms to that of the first sort key.

 

      ascending

      descending

 

    Number of items displayed in the list

 

              Select the number of items to be displayed in one page of the bibliography list from the pull-down menu.

 

 

Bookmark Reference

Any searched bibliography can be saved so that it can be referenced later.

Bibliography information is saved in the bookmark and the bookmark can be "referenced" on the bibliography search screen.

      

 [Bookmark] button:  Displays a list of bibliographies stored in the bookmark.  If only one bibliography is stored, its bibliography details are displayed.

 

 

Search History Reference

 

Clicking the [Search history] button enables you to reference the search history.

 

 

How to Use

 

Clicking the [How to use] button activates the "online manual" for the currently displayed screen.

 

 

Navigation Function

 

Clicking the Navigation Guide button causes a jump to the beginning of a set of available function buttons.
